On his death the Baronies of Howard, Mowbray, Segrave, Talbot, Strange of Blackmere and Furnivall fell into abeyance between his two nieces, the daughters and coheiresses of his brother Philip Howard, or their representatives.  In 1777 these were firstly Charles Philip Stourton, 17th Baron Stourton, son and heir of Winifred Howard, the first daughter, late wife of William Stourton, 16th Baron Stourton and secondly Anne Howard, the second daughter, wife of Robert Edward Petre, 9th Baron Petre. The Barony of Howard of Castle Rising and the Earldom of Norwich became extinct.
