Ernst I, "the Pious" (1601- 1675) Duke of Saxe-Gotha and, by marriage, became also Duke of Saxe-Altenburg, sixth son of John II (1570 – 1605) Duke of Saxe-Weimar and Jena. The duchies were later merged into Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg from 1672. Ancestor of the dukes of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg, of Saxe-Coburg, of Saxe-Meiningen, of Saxe-Römhild, of Saxe-Eisenberg, of Saxe-Hildburghausen, of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld. Married Elisabeth Sophie of Saxe-Altenburg (1619 – 1680) daughter of Johann Philipp, Duke of Saxe-Altenburg. See Saxe-Weimar.

Frederick I (1646 – 1691) Duke of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg, jointly with his brothers until 1680. Eldest son of Ernst I, (1601 – 1675) Duke of Saxe-Gotha. Knight of the Order of the White Elephant. Married firstly Magdalena Sibylle of Saxe-Weissenfels (1648 – 1681) daughter of August, Duke of Saxe-Weissenfels and secondly Christine of Baden-Durlach (1645 – 1705) daughter of Frederick VI, Margrave of Baden-Durlach.

Frederick II (1676 – 1732) Duke of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg. Knight of the Order of the White Elephant. Married Magdalena Augusta of Anhalt-Zerbst (1679 – 1740) daughter of Karl, Prince of Anhalt-Zerbst. His daughter married Augusta (1719 – 1772) married Frederick, Prince of Wales, parents of George III, King of Great Britain and Ireland.

Frederick III (1699 – 1772) Duke of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg. Knight of the Garter. Knight of the Order of the White Eagle. Married Luise Dorothea of Saxe-Meiningen (1710 – 1767) daughter of Ernst Ludwig I, Duke of Saxe-Meiningen.

Ernest II (1745 – 1804) Duke of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg. Knight of the Garter. Married Charlotte of Saxe-Meiningen (1751 – 1827) daughter of Anton Ulrich, Duke of Saxe-Meiningen.

Augustus (1772 – 1822) Duke of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg. Knight of the Order of the White Elephant. Knight of the Order of the Black Eagle. Knight of the Order of St. Andrew. Married firstly Louise Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Schwerin (1779 – 1801) daughter of Friedrich Franz I, Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin and secondly Karoline Amalie of Hesse-Kassel (1771 – 1848) daughter of William I, Landgrave later Prince of Hesse.

Albrecht V (1648-1699) Duke of Saxe-Coburg, second son of Ernst I, "the Pious". Knight of the Order of the White Elephant. Married firstly Marie Elisabeth of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel (1638 - 1687) daughter of Augustus the Younger, Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg and secondly morganatically Susanne Elisabeth Kempinski (1643–1717), created Countess Kempinsky of Schwisitz and Altenhofen, daughter of Nikolaus Kempinski, Freiherr von Schwisiz und Altenhofen zu Limberg.

Johann Ernest IV (1658 – 1729) Duke of Saxe –Saalfeld and Duke of Saxe-Coburg from 1699, seventh son of Ernst I, "the Pious". Married firstly Sophie Hedwig of Saxe-Merseburg (1660 - 1686) daughter of Christian I, Duke of Saxe-Merseburg and secondly Charlotte Johanna of Waldeck-Wildungen (1664 – 1699) daughter of Josias II, Count of Waldeck-Wildungen.
