Francis Stephen of Lorraine (1708-1765) as Grand Duke of Tuscany

  • Francis Stephen of Lorraine (1708-1765) Holy Roman Emperor from 1745 and Grand Duke of Tuscany from 1737. Francis traded the Duchy of Lorraine to the ex-Polish king Stanisław Leszczyński in exchange for the Grand Duchy of Tuscany in 1737. Married  Maria Theresa (1717 – 1780) Archduchess of Austria, Queen of Hungary, Queen of Croatia, Queen of Bohemia, Grandduchess of Transylvania, Duchess of Mantua, Milan, Lodomeria and Galicia, the Austrian Netherlands and Parma. By marriage, she became Duchess of Lorraine, Grand Duchess of Tuscany and Holy Roman Empress.

Married firstly Princess Luisa of Naples and Sicily (1773 – 1802) daughter of Ferdinand I (1751 –1825) King of the Two Sicilies and secondly Princess Maria Ferdinanda of Saxony (1796 – 1865) daughter of Prince Maximilian of Saxony (1759 – 1838) Crown Prince of Saxony.

Ferdinand was forced to renounce his throne by the Treaty of Aranjuez in 1801: Napoleon created the Kingdom of Etruria, as compensation for the Bourbon Dukes of Parma, dispossessed by the Peace of Lunéville in that same year.

Ferdinand was compensated with the Electorate of Salzburg, and was made a Prince-elector of the Holy Roman Empire in 1802.

In 1805, Ferdinand had to give up Salzburg as well, and made Duke of Würzburg, while remaining an Elector. With the dissolution of the Empire in 1806, he took the new title of Grand Duke of Würzburg. In 1814, after Napoleon's fall, Ferdinand was restored as Grand Duke of Tuscany.

The Order of Saint Joseph was created in 1807 by Ferdinand III, Grand Duke of Tuscany during his reign as Grand Duke of Würzburg.
