 Kalmar Union (1389-1521)

It was a personal union that joined under a single monarch the three kingdoms of Denmark, Sweden (then including Finland), and Norway.

Christian II (1481 –1559)

• Christian II (1481 –1559) King of Denmark and Norway (1513 –1523) Sweden (1520 –1521). Also Duke of Schleswig and Holstein (1513 –1523) in joint rule with his uncle Frederick. Married Isabella of Austria (1501 – 1526) Archduchess of Austria and Infanta of Castile and Aragon, daughter of King Philip I and Queen Joanna of Castile.

• Gustav I (1496 – 1560) King of Sweden from 1523. Born Gustav Eriksson of the Vasa noble family and later known as Gustav Vasa. Married firstly Catherine of Saxe-Lauenburg (1513 – 1535) daughter of Magnus I, Duke of Saxe-Lauenburg, secondly Margaret Leijonhufvud (1516 – 1551) née Margareta Eriksdotter, daughter of Erik Abrahamsson Leijonhufvud and thirdly Catherine Stenbock (1535 – 1621) daughter of Riksråd Gustaf Olofsson Stenbock.

Eric XIV (1533 –1577)

• Eric XIV (1533 –1577) King of Sweden from 1560 until he was deposed in 1568. Married Karin Månsdotter (1550 – 1612). Founder of The Order of the Saviour in 1561.

John III (1537 – 1592)

• John III (1537 – 1592) King of Sweden from 1568. Married firstly Catherine Jagiellon (1526 – 1583) daughter of Sigismund I the Old, King of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and secondly (1568 – 1597) Gunilla Johansdotter Bielke daughter of Johan Axelsson Bielke. Founder of The Order of the Lamb of God (Agnus Dei) in 1569.

• Sigismund III Vasa (1566 – 1632) King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania from 1587 to 1632, and King of Sweden from 1592 until he was deposed in 1599. Married firstly Anne of Austria (1573 – 1598) daughter of Charles II Francis of Austria, Archduke of Inner Austria and secondly Constance of Austria (1588 –1631) daughter of Charles II Francis of Austria, Archduke of Inner Austria (she married the widower of her older sister).

Married firstly Maria of the Palatinate (1561 – 1589) Duchess of Södermanland daughter of Louis VI, Elector Palatine and secondly Christina of Holstein-Gottorp (1573– 1625) daughter of Adolf, Duke of Holstein-Gottorp. Founder of The Royal Order of Jehova in 1606.

Gustav IV Adolf (1778 – 1837)
