The Earldom of Kellie has been held by the Earls of Mar since 1829.  On the death of John Francis Miller Erskine, 9/25th Earl of Mar, 11th Earl of Kellie, the senior Earldom of Mar (cr. 1114) passed to his nephew and heir general, Rev John Francis Erskine Goodeve later 27th Earl of Mar (1836–1930), whilst the junior Earldom of Mar (cr. 1565) and the Earldom of Kellie passed to his cousin and heir male, Lt Col Walter Coningsby Erskine later 12th Earl of Kellie, 10th Earl of Mar (1810–1872).  The Earldom of Kellie has been attached to the junior Earldom of Mar since that date.
