Duke of Rothes
- John Leslie, 1st Duke of Rothes, Marquess of Bambreich, Earl of Leslie, Viscount of Lugtoun, Lord Auchmotie and Caskieberry, 7th Earl of Rothes (c. 1630–1681) The Dukedom of Rothes and other peerages created in 1680 became extinct on his death, and the Earldom of Rothes passed to his elder daughter.
Charles Hamilton, 5th Earl of Haddington
- Margaret Leslie, 8th Countess of Rothes (d. 1700) married Charles Hamilton, 5th Earl of Haddington (c. 1650–1685). 1st Duke of Rothes, had received a re-grant of the Earldom of Rothes in 1663 which allowed it to be passed on to his daughter. According to the regrant of 1663, the Earldom of Rothes was not allowed to be united with the Earldom of Haddington. See House of Hamilton.
- John Hamilton-Leslie, 9th Earl of Rothes (d. 1722) Elder son of 5th Earl of Haddington. Resigned his rights to his father's Earldom of Haddington in favour of his younger brother, Thomas Hamilton, 6th Earl of Haddington KT (c. 1680–1735)

Married secondly Sir Lucas Pepys, 1st Baronet of Brook Street whose baronetcy was created with remainder to his elder brother Sir William Pepys, 1st Baronet of Wimpole Street (1740–1825) from whom the Earls of Cottenham descend.

- Catherine Leslie, 4th Countess of Leven (1663–1676) On the death of the Countess of Leven the Earldom should have passed to the second son of the Earl of Rothes (later 1st Duke of Rothes) under the terms of the 1665 regrant; however, the Duke had no sons and so the Earldom remained suspended until his death without issue in 1681 when it passed to the next heir, The Hon. David Melville, second surviving son of George Melville, 1st Earl of Melville, by his wife Catharine, only sister of Alexander Leslie, 2nd Earl of Leven.
