Baroness Greenwich

  • Lady Caroline Townshend (nee Campbell), 1st Baroness Greenwich (1717–1794), daughter of Field Marshal John Campbell, 2nd Duke of Argyll, who had been created Earl of Greenwich in 1715 and Duke of Greenwich in 1719, titles which became extinct on his death in 1743. She married as her second husband, Charles Townshend (1725–1767), second son of Charles Townshend, 3rd Viscount Townshend. The barony was created with remainder to the male issue by her second husband. She died without surviving issue to him. She married firstly Francis Scott, Earl of Dalkeith, the elder son of the 2nd Duke of Buccleuch. The Dukes of Buccleuch now quarter her arms as the heiress to the Duke of Argyll and Greenwich.
