House of Finch


The Finch family is believed to be descended from Henry FitzHerbert, Lord Chamberlain to King Henry I (r. 1100–1135). The name change came in the 1350s after marriage to an heiress member of the Finch family.

  • Sir Moyle Finch, 1st Baronet (d. 1614), married Elizabeth Heneage (1556-1634), only daughter of Sir Thomas Heneage (1533–1595) created 1st Viscountess Maidstone and 1st Countess of Winchilsea.

  • Heneage Finch, 3rd Earl of Winchilsea, 1st Baron FitzHerbert of Eastwell (c. 1635–1689) married Lady Mary Seymour (d. 1672), daughter of William Seymour, 2nd Duke of Somerset, by his second wife Lady Frances Devereux, daughter of Robert Devereux, 2nd Earl of Essex.

  • Daniel Finch, 8th Earl of Winchilsea, 3rd Earl of Nottingham KG (c. 1709–1769)
  • George Finch, 9th Earl of Winchilsea, 4th Earl of NottinghamKG (1752–1826) On his death the house at Burley-on-the-Hill and the estates in Rutland, Buckinghamshire and Essex passed to his illegitimate son, George Finch.

  • George Finch MP (1794-1870), illegitimate son of George Finch, 9th Earl of Winchilsea, 4th Earl of Nottingham KG (1752–1826) . In 1808 he was granted a license to use the Finch arms. On his father’s death he inherited the Burley-on the-Hill estates.
