1st Baron Catherlough of Catherlough

Barons le Despencer in the Peerage of England, Fourth Creation (1357)

  • Thomas le Despencer, 1st Earl of Gloucester, 2nd Baron le Despencer KG(1373–1400) (attainder of first and second creations reversed 1398; attainted 1400)

On the death of the infant Lady Anne Beauchamp, in her own right Countess of Warwick and Baroness Burghersh, the Barony of Burghersh and the representation of the three Baronies of le Despencer fell into abeyance between her cousin George [Nevill], Lord Bergavenny, and her aunt Anne, Countess of Warwick. On the attainder and execution of Lady Margaret Plantagenet, in her own right Countess of Warwick and Salisbury, on 28 May 1541 any claim to the four Baronies by the descendants of Anne, Countess of Warwick, lapsed and the sole representation lay with the Barons Bergavenny. The attainder of Thomas, Earl of Gloucester, was reversed in 1461 but the abeyancies continued until 25 May 1604, when the abeyancy of the 1295 Barony of le Despencer was terminated in favour of Mary, Lady Fane:

On the death of the 14th Baron le Despencer the Barony of Catherlough became extinct, the Earldom of Westmorland passed to a second cousin once removed, and the Barony of le Despencer fell into abeyance between the descendants of his two sisters, Lady Mary Dashwood and Lady Catherine Paul.  The Barony of le Despencer was called out of abeyance on 19 Apr 1763 in favour of Sir Frances Dashwood, 2nd Bt., of West Wycombe, co. Buckingham:

On the death of the 14th Baron le Despencer in 1781 the barony fell into abeyance between his sister, Rachel, Lady Austin, and the descendants of his aunt, Lady Catherine Paul. On the death of his sister in 1788 the barony was called out of abeyance in favour of his first cousin twice removed.
