On the death of the 3rd Earl of Essex the Earldom of Essex became extinct, the Viscountcy of Hereford passed to his first cousin twice removed, Walter Devereux, and the Baronies of Ferrers of Chartley, de Ferrers and Bourchier fell into abeyance between his two sisters, Lady Frances Seymour, wife of William Seymour, 2nd Duke of Somerset, and Lady Dorothy Shirley, wife of Sir Henry Shirley, 2nd Bt.; the Barony of Ferrers of Chartley was called out of abeyance in 1677 in favour of Sir Robert Shirley, 7th Bt., later Robert Shirley, 1st Earl Ferrers:

The Barony of Ferrers of Chartley was held by the 1st Earl Ferrers from 3 Sep 1711 On the death of 1st Earl Ferrers the Earldom of Ferrers passed to his second son, and the Barony of Ferrers of Chartley passed to his grand-daughter, the only surviving child of his deceased first so, The Hon. Robert Shirley (1673-1698):
5th Earl of Northampton
- Elizabeth Compton (nee Shirley), Countess of Northampton, 14th Baroness Ferrers of Chartley (1694–1741) married 5th Earl of Northampton.
On the death of 14th Baroness Ferrers of Chartley the Barony fell into abeyance between her surviving daughters and co-heiresses. On the death of Lady Jane Compton in 1749, the only surviving daughter, Lady Charlotte Compton, became sole heir to her mother and consequently entitled to the Barony (on the death of her father in 1754 she also became suo jure Baroness Compton):

On the death of the 3rd Marquess Townshend the Marquessate of Townshend passed to his cousin, the Earldom of Leicester became extinct and the Baronies of Ferrers of Chartley and Compton fell into abeyance between (1) his nephew Marmion Edward Ferrers, of Baddesley Clinton, co. Warwick, son and heir of Edward Ferrers, of Baddesley Clinton, co. Warwick, by his wife Lady Harriet Anne Townshend, his 2nd sister, who had died in 1845; and (2) his 3rd sister, Lady Elizabeth Margaret Boultbec, wife of Joseph Moore Boultbec, of Springfield Park, co. Warwick (his 1st sister, Lady Charlotte Barbara Bisshopp, wife of Lt Col Hon Cecil Bisshopp, had died s.p. in 1807). These two baronies continue to be in abeyance and are unlikely to be revived.
