Duke of Hamilton, 1st Earl of Selkirk and Lord Daer and Shortcleuch KG

  • William Douglas later Douglas-Hamilton, Duke of Hamilton, 1st Earl of Selkirk and Lord Daer and Shortcleuch KG (1635–1694) married Anne Hamilton, 3rd Duchess of Hamilton (c. 1631–1716) Created in 1646 Lord Daer and Shortcleuch and Earl of Selkirk, with remainder to his heirs male whatsoever, but subsequently resigned these honours into the King's hands, who conferred them by novodamus in 1688 upon his younger son, Charles Douglas-Hamilton;  created in  1660 Lord Aven, Machanshire, Polmont and Daer, Earl of Arran, Lanark and Selkirk, Marquess of Clydesdale and Duke of Hamilton for life, third son of William Douglas, 1st Marquess of Douglas.

  • William Douglas later Douglas-Hamilton, Duke of Hamilton, 1st Earl of Selkirk and Lord Daer and Shortcleuch (1635–1694) , third son of William Douglas, 1st Marquess of Douglas. In 1688, the Duke of Hamilton surrendered his previous titles, and they were reconferred on his second son, Lord Charles Hamilton, who became 2nd Earl of Selkirk, and who changed his surname to Douglas with a special remainder designed to prevent them becoming merged with the Dukedom.
